Post-moving WIP#1

I’ve moved after living in the same house for 32 years. Once my two kids left home, my knitting took over. Walking into my knitting room, knowing I wouldn’t have another one in an apartment, was sad and problematic. What should I move, and what to do with the rest?

Moving some of my yarn forward was fairly easy. I had my knitting guild friends come over and take it away. My yarn now has new homes where it will be treasured.

The hard part was facing all those WIPs. OMG, there were so many. I must admit that I brought many with me. I’m going to go through them and tackle them one at a time, but not right now because I can’t face them.

First on my list is this Bonne Annee by Vera Sanon.

I even chose the same colour.

Why was it in the knitting time-out corner for years? Why was I knitting the extra small size when I need a large? Questions, questions, right?

Once I took out my ruler it was quite obvious. The gauge for the pattern was 24 sts = 10cm/4″ and I was getting 20 sts = 10 cm/4″. Wow, that throws things off just a tiny bit, ha, ha. I’m using fingering yarn but still can’t get gauge, my usual frustration, pardon me, my usual challenge (trying to change my attitude here).

Problem solving commenced and I think I have a reasonably successful body, not perfect, but finished.

My tip of the day is to work your body on two circular needles, one for the front stitches and one for the back. Each time you switch needles you knit the stitches back onto the other end of the same needle.

Here is an old Cat Bordhi video for you (somehow goats come into it, LOL): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RybPvCNfrT8.

It works great. You can pop it over your head and try it on about 20 thousand times to get the size you need. Yes, that’s how I did it.

The cables kept me going. Aren’t they great?

Cheers, Deb

I'm a Knitter. The capital K means every day, everywhere. I started designing as co-owner of Cabin Fever with my sister Lyn. We have published over 160 patterns and 11 books. I'm also working on a new set of patterns for Any Gauge or Gauge-free knitting so you can dive into your stash and cast on for a Top Down sweater that fits, or an accessory to use up those odd balls of yarn.

  1. Oh Deb! I was thinking of you just this week and hoping you were ok since I (we) haven’t heard from you in what seems like ages, gal! It is so great to see you posting once again. Cables are my favorite, although I have not yet gotten used to doing it w/o a cable needle. (fear of those stitches just sneaking their way down into the fabric.)Love the color of that yarn. Anyway, so GLAD to see you posting and best of luck in the new home. Corinne aka teresa (repied via email since I can’t seem to get the reply button to work on my computer)

    1. Hiya, so glad to hear from you. It’s taken a bit to get going again but I’m glad to be blogging again. Moving was big but we are settling in and waiting for curling to start. I’m going to teach at the local yarn store here, although it may take a while for people to know me and sign up. All good.

  2. Glad to have you back blogging AND with a finished item. Ex-military wife so know it can take awhile to settle into a new location and get things settled – if ever before the next move.
Love the colour of the sweater. What yarn shop will you be teaching it so I can either attend or send some friends in to take a class?

    1. Whoa, you would know about moving, better than me, for sure. I’m teaching at String Theory Yarns in Fergus, Ontario. Anywhere near you?

      1. Not anymore – lived in Kitchener-Waterloo for 12 years – but have friends in London who have been known to travel for a particular course or teacher so will let them know. I am now in Victoria Harbour living with a daughter. Has been almost 2 years but still things I am adjusting to – lack of space, adjusting to the space and yarn I have, not hosting a knitting group in my house, not driving, etc. Good luck with the teaching and your adjusting.
